Ghent for a Day: One of the Best Cities in the World

Ghent is a beautiful city located in the heart of Belgium.

Situated on the banks of the Scheldt River in Belgium, Ghent is a city with a rich history and culture. From its beautiful architecture to its thriving arts scene, there’s something for everyone in Ghent.

Whether you’re looking for a place to eat, drink or shop, you’ll find great deals in Ghent. And with its convenient location, it’s easy to get around the city. The best way to see everything is by foot as all of the top attractions and restaurants are within walking distance. If you’re looking to save money, buses cost the same as trams.  This is obviously ideal for those ecotourism breaks which minimize the carbon footprint of any trip.

So if you’re looking for an amazing city that won’t break the bank, Ghent is your best bet.

What to do in Ghent?

There are many things to do in Ghent, but some of the most popular include visiting the Korenmarkt, exploring Saint Bavo Cathedral, and checking out the Gravensteen castle. In addition, Ghent is home to many great restaurants and bars that are worth checking out.

Ghent is a great city to explore on foot. The main entry point is Gent-Sint-Pieters train station, and from there it’s just a short tram ride or walk to the city center. The Korenmarkt is one of the most popular areas in Ghent, and it’s only a five minute tram ride or 20+ minute walk from the train station. Here you’ll find plenty of cafes, restaurants, and bars to enjoy.

If you’re looking for something more historical, then be sure to check out Saint Bavo Cathedral or Gravensteen castle. Both attractions are within walking distance of each other and the city center. And if you’re looking for some good food options, Ghent has you covered there too with its wide range of cuisines available.

Where to eat in Ghent?

If you’re looking for a great Italian meal while in Ghent, be sure to check out Pasta la Vista. They serve up some of the best pasta dishes I’ve ever had, and at a very reasonable price point too! You can’t go wrong with their homemade sauces.

Another great option for food in Ghent is Manhattan’s Burger. They have a vegetarian option, as well as delicious sweet potato fries. And don’t forget to try their secret sauce – it’s amazing!

Nightlife in Ghent

When it comes to nightlife, Ghent is definitely a city that knows how to have a good time! There are plenty of great bars and pubs where you can drink with friends, and the locals are always happy to show visitors a good time.

My personal favorite places to go out in Ghent are Dulle Griet and the Trollekelder. Both of these places serve some of the best beer in town, and they’re always packed with people having a good time. If you’re looking for something a bit more local, then I recommend checking out De Kruidse Vrouw. It’s not as well-known as Dulle Griet or the Trollekelder, but the atmosphere is really fun and it’s a great place to meet people.

Travel Safely with a VPN

When many of us travel we use the internet to keep our normal lives on track.   For example most of us have small internet enabled devices like smart phones, tablets and laptops which travel everywhere with us.  It’s great to be able to check your bank account, pay your bills when you’re away from home.  However you should be especially careful of doing these things when travelling.

The problem is that many internet access points you’ll use when travelling simply aren’t safe.  Even in places you think you can trust like airports, train stations and large hotels.  Security is rarely a priority in these situations especially for things like free Wifi access. It’s not really safe at all to use these wifi points to access anything important as there’s a very real chance your usernames, passwords and other credentials can be stolen in transit.  It’s relatively simple to do and a prime target for computer criminals looking to prey on travellers and expats.

If  you really do need to access these sort of sites when travelling and lets face it many of us do, then there’s only one option.  You should use a commercial VPN service to protect your data when using these unknown wifi access points.  Services like NordVPN can be installed very easily on all your devices and enabled whenever you need to protect your connection.   What’s more they’re really useful for bypassing the geo-targeting blocks you’ll encounter when travelling too.  Here’s an example showing how you can watch the BBC from Belgium – this is using the NordVPN service but others work too.

Conclusion

From its charming medieval center to its lively modern districts, Ghent has something for everyone. With excellent food, drink and culture on offer, as well as a wonderful climate and friendly people, it’s difficult to find fault with this Belgian gem.
